Don’t Try to Prune Trees Yourself! Read This to Know Why

Are you finding yourself constantly worried about that overgrown tree in your yard? Maybe you are thinking about pruning it yourself. And why not? Pruning is the best and most effective way to get rid of dead branches and stubs and promote healthy growth, prevent breakage, and improve the appearance of the tree. So, nobody can fault you for wanting to wield a chainsaw and climb up that tree like a lumberjack.

But is that what you should do? No.

DIY pruning can be dangerous. Without the proper skills, knowledge, or equipment, there’s a lot that could go wrong. Even if you know your way around your power tools, trying to operate a chainsaw while hanging 15 feet above the ground is a recipe for disaster.

Here are some of the reasons why you should NEVER prune trees yourself:

  • You don’t have the right equipment

Pruning a tree requires specialized equipment. Unless you have a climbing harness, carabiners, ropes, pruning shears, and a lightweight chainsaw, among others, in your shed, you are not equipped to tackle this job.

  • Can you even reach the tree?

Trees that are near power lines or in hard-to-reach locations can be even more difficult to prune. Without professional expertise, they cannot be safely climbed as well. A professional tree company in Cherry Hill will have the proper equipment, including cranes, that will help them reach trees that you cannot and prune them with accuracy.

  • You can hurt yourself

Unlike pruning a shrub or low-hanging branches, pruning large trees or branches carry several risks. You could fall off. Branches can break. A tree branch could fall on you. Power wires could be closer than you could think. These risks can lead to severe injuries, and in worse cases, death.

  • Improper pruning can lead to future problems

DIY pruning can often lead to numerous issues in the future. For instance, if you cut too many branches, the tree could experience stunted growth or eventually die. Sometimes, people also cut too many lower branches, which makes the tree top-heavy and it is more likely to topple over during a big storm.

  • Getting rid of green waste can be difficult

Even if you use some of the tree branches for firewood, there will still be a lot of green waste – a lot more than you can handle. You cannot just throw them in your green waste bin. And that means you will have to cut all the branches even further and dispose them of in small quantities, which can be quite an arduous task. So, why not let the pros handle it for you?
